16 Hours Outdoor First Aid Course
This Outdoor First Aid course delivered over 16 hours is recognised by Mountain Training, British Canoeing, RYA and many other governing bodies as fulfilling the requirements for Outdoor First Aid. A highly practical course that’s delivered by experienced tutors with a background in outdoor and remote environments. We offer specialist hands-on first aid training in Devon, Cornwall and across the Southwest.
The 16 Hours Outdoor First Aid course is aimed at people undertaking the role of a first aider in an outdoors environment. This Outdoor First Aid qualification is externally regulated and the qualification meets the requirements of the Institute for Outdoor Learning which is recognised throughout the UK and is the choice for experienced practitioners who work in the outdoor environments. including:
- Forest Schools Teachers.
- Paddle sports instructors.
- Snowsports Instructors.
- Mountain Bike Guides and Coaches.
- Forestry workers.
- Ecologists and Rangers.
- Remote Working First Aid.
- Wilderness First Aid.

Our Outdoor first aid course content is based on current guidelines published by the UK Resuscitation Council as well as guidance and best practice from other advisory bodies.
Outdoor first aid course overview
This practical first aid training course is designed to improve skills and knowledge for all outdoor professionals. We use a mixture of indoor and outdoor learning to simulate injuries and accidents found in a variety of outdoor settings whether it be outdoor sports, mountain leading, hill walking or forestry working to name a few.
This first aid course is continually assessed with constructive feedback throughout. As first aid is a practical subject, the learner will be required to participate in practical hands-on training. The assessment process requires each learner to demonstrate skills with a training casualty.
Whatever activity you specialise in such as mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking to skiing or snowboarding our comprehensive 16 Hour Outdoor First Aid course will cover the most important aspects of first aid training, including:
- Outdoor first aid kits
- Managing an incident
- Basic life support, CPR and AED with remote protocols.
- Unresponsive casualties, recovery position variations
- Breathing problems
- Bleeding, both minor and severe
- Head and spinal injuries
- Hypothermia, hyperthermia and cold injuries
- Common illnesses and medical emergencies
- Animal bites and stings
Certificates
Optimal First Aid offer two options for the Outdoor First Aid course first aid certificate. There is no difference with the credibility, but some will prefer a certificate from OFQAUL where others will not.
Optimal First Aid self-certificate this course. The 16 Hour Outdoor First Aid course we deliver meets National Governing Body awards (NGBs) of many outdoor activities and is valid for 3 years.
Learners are assessed on the same practical skills but will be given different multiple choice test papers at the end of day two.

Emergency First Aid at work
Our Outdoor first aid training course also covers the Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) syllabus on day one.
We can offer the regulated EFAW certificate for an additional £15 per person, providing you with both the outdoor and workplace qualifications at the same time.
