By the end of this three-day course, learners will be able to:

1. Understand the Role of a First Aider

• Explain the duties and responsibilities of a workplace first aider.

• Understand the importance of incident management and communication.

• Demonstrate how to minimise risks to themselves and others at the scene of an incident.

2. Conduct a Primary Survey

• Assess the situation safely and identify dangers.

• Carry out a primary survey of a casualty using the DRABC approach.

• Prioritise treatment for multiple casualties.

3. Administer First Aid to an Unresponsive Casualty

• Place a casualty in the recovery position.

• Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on adults (and use of an AED).

• Manage choking incidents in adults (and adapt for child or infant if applicable).

4. Manage Major Injuries and Bleeding

• Control external bleeding effectively.

• Recognise and manage shock (including hypovolaemic shock).

• Provide first aid for burns, scalds, and eye injuries.

5. Recognise and Treat Common Workplace Illnesses

• Identify and respond to heart attacks, strokes, asthma, seizures, and anaphylaxis.

• Manage diabetic emergencies.

• Understand how to support casualties experiencing fainting, hyperventilation, or minor illnesses.

6. Manage Fractures and Soft Tissue Injuries

• Recognise and provide first aid for fractures, sprains, strains, and dislocations.

• Safely immobilise injuries to limbs and joints.

7. Handle Environmental and Secondary Emergencies

• Provide care for heat and cold-related conditions (hypothermia, heat exhaustion, etc.).

• Understand first aid procedures for crush injuries, head injuries, and spinal injuries.

8. Record and Report Accidents and Incidents

• Complete workplace accident and incident reports correctly.

• Understand RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations).

• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling casualty information.

The First Aid at Work (FAW) course is fully compliant with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
