FREC 4 Course Overview

The Qualsafe Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (RQF) is the next step for learners who have completed FREC 3 and want to develop more advanced pre-hospital emergency care knowledge and skills.

FREC 4 develops a deeper understanding of patient assessment, ECG monitoring, airway management, medical gases, trauma, paediatric emergencies and complex patient presentations.

The course combines clinical knowledge with practical exercises and realistic scenarios. It is delivered by an experienced paramedic, helping learners understand both how to perform interventions and why they may be required.

Who Is FREC 4 For?

FREC 4 is suitable for people working or progressing within:

Event medical services
Pre-hospital and emergency care
Security and close protection
Remote and higher-risk environments
Outdoor and expedition settings
Film and television medical support
Industrial and operational response teams
Roles requiring enhanced emergency care capability

It is designed for learners progressing from FREC 3 or a recognised equivalent qualification.

FREC 4 Entry Requirements

Before beginning the qualification, learners must:

Be at least 18 years old
Hold a valid Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Response Emergency Care (RQF) or a Qualsafe-recognised equivalent
Provide a CPD profile evidencing 118 hours of relevant study and/or contextualised practice

The 118 hours must be completed and evidenced before the FREC 4 qualification begins.

Qualsafe also recommends that learners have a minimum of Level 2 literacy or equivalent.

Training combines underpinning clinical knowledge with practical patient assessment, treatment and decision-making.

Course Format and Assessment

FREC 4 includes five days of face-to-face training, followed by the completion of three post-course workbooks.

Assessment includes:

Knowledge assessments
Practical skills assessments
Scenario-based assessment
Three post-course workbooks

The qualification does not finish at the end of the five classroom days. All required assessments and workbooks must be completed successfully before certification can be awarded.

Guidance and preparation are provided throughout the course, and all three workbooks are included in the course price.

Delivered by an Experienced Paramedic

Training is delivered by an experienced paramedic with clinical and pre-hospital care experience.

At Level 4, learners must understand the clinical reasoning behind an intervention as well as demonstrate the practical skill. Training therefore focuses on patient assessment, underpinning knowledge and appropriate decision-making.
