Emergency First Aid at Work + Forestry (EFAW+F) Training in Devon & Cornwall

Emergency First Aid at Work + Forestry

If you work in forestry, arboriculture, or remote outdoor environments, standard first aid training often doesn’t reflect the reality of the job. Injuries are more severe, help takes longer to arrive, and decisions have to be made in difficult, isolated conditions.

This Emergency First Aid at Work + Forestry (EFAW+F) course is designed for exactly that world.

Delivered across Devon and Cornwall, the training focuses on real-world incident management in high-risk outdoor environments where immediate access to emergency services cannot be assumed.

Whether you’re working in woodland management, tree surgery, land-based operations, or remote outdoor sites, this course equips you to act decisively when it matters most.

What is EFAW+F (Forestry First Aid)?

Emergency First Aid at Work + Forestry (EFAW+F) is an enhanced version of the standard workplace first aid qualification, tailored specifically for forestry and high-risk outdoor environments.

While standard EFAW focuses on basic workplace incidents, EFAW+F addresses the additional risks found in forestry work, including:

  • Delayed emergency response times in rural locations
  • High-energy trauma such as chainsaw injuries and falls from height
  • Environmental exposure such as cold, wet and remote conditions
  • Difficult access for emergency services

This course bridges the gap between basic workplace compliance and the reality of working in remote, hazardous environments.

Who is this course designed for?

This training is designed for individuals and teams who operate in higher-risk outdoor environments, including:

  • Arborists and tree surgeons
  • Forestry and woodland workers
  • Grounds maintenance teams
  • Land-based contractors
  • Outdoor instructors and activity providers
  • Utility and infrastructure workers in rural areas
  • Security teams operating in remote environments

If your work takes you away from immediate medical support, this course is built for you.

Why standard first aid training isn’t enough in forestry environments

Forestry and remote outdoor work present challenges that standard first aid qualifications don’t fully prepare you for.

Delayed emergency response times

In rural areas across Devon and Cornwall, ambulance response times can be significantly longer due to access limitations and distance. This means first aiders often need to manage casualties for extended periods.

High-energy trauma risks

Chainsaws, heavy machinery, falling timber, and uneven terrain all increase the likelihood of serious injury. These incidents require more advanced decision-making than typical workplace scenarios.

Remote and difficult terrain

From dense woodland in Devon to coastal and moorland environments in Cornwall, access can be limited. Evacuation may be complex and require structured casualty management.

Pressure decision-making

In these environments, first aiders are often the first and only responder for a significant period of time. Confidence, structure, and clarity of action are critical.

What you will learn on the EFAW+F course

This course is practical, scenario-led, and focused on real-world application rather than theory-heavy classroom delivery.

Primary survey and scene safety

How to assess the situation quickly, ensure safety, and prioritise actions under pressure.

Major bleeding and trauma management

Control of severe bleeding, wound packing principles, and managing traumatic injuries until help arrives.

Airway and breathing emergencies

Recognition and immediate management of life-threatening airway and breathing problems.

Environmental injuries

Management of hypothermia, cold exposure, and weather-related conditions common in Devon and Cornwall’s rural environments.

Incident management in remote settings

How to structure your response when emergency services are delayed and you are operating in isolation.

Why choose Optimal First Aid for EFAW+F training

This training is delivered by professionals with real operational experience in high-risk and remote environments.

Rather than focusing purely on compliance, the emphasis is on decision-making under pressure, practical casualty management, and realistic scenario training.

Key advantages include:

  • Training built around real-world outdoor and remote incidents
  • Experience working in high-risk and operational environments
  • Scenario-based delivery rather than classroom-heavy instruction
  • Focus on confidence, clarity, and action under pressure
  • Courses tailored to forestry, outdoor, and remote industries

The aim is simple: prepare people for what actually happens in the field, not just what appears in a training manual.

Certification and compliance

This course is delivered in line with current HSE guidance for workplace first aid training, with additional forestry-specific content designed to reflect the risks associated with outdoor and remote working environments.

Upon completion, participants receive certification valid for the standard workplace validity period.
